Andrew Broder, aka Fog, has described his guitar playing as bipolar and his turntabling as a fixation. This psychic intensity comes across as a focused, varied submersion in sound. Raised in a Minnesota suburb, Broder taught himself to write music and play guitar and bass as an adolescent. He refers to his lyrics and collages of sound as "little flashes, images, remembering things from childhood that I had blocked out. Like seeing images through a fog." As a teen, his chosen vocation was DJing and he reacted to his suburban environment by "doing graffiti and seeking adventure and identity." But the hip hop and punk arenas he tried to embody couldn't contain his wide-ranging musical ambitions. So, prompted by a bout with pneumonia, he dropped out of college after his second year and delved into the world of musical creativity, fleshing out an instinct-driven sonic yearning he sums up as "telling a story." ~ Travis Drageset, All Music Guide |
