Soho Biography

Led by twin sisters Jackie and Pauline Cuff along with guitarist Timothy London, Soho had a brief moment in the limelight in the early '90s with the single "Hippychick." The sisters were born in the town of Wolverhampton, in England. In the early '80s, they began singing together while working as student nurses in St. Albans. When they met London, they began playing together under a variety of names until finally they settled on Soho. Another member joined up, Nigel Dukey D, but he left the group before they secured a contract with Virgin in 1989. Their early singles, "You Won't Hold Me Down" and "Message From My Baby," were quite unpopular, and the album (entitled Noise) was a flop, never even reaching America's shores. The band was dropped, eventually getting a gig at an Italian disco singing covers, before signing a deal with Savage Tam Records. Their second single for the label was "Hippychick," which sampled the guitar from the Smiths' "How Soon is Now." The single took off, thanks to a distribution deal with Atco, and the band went on the road with Jesus Jones. Despite the single, they never managed to capitalize on their success. London and Jackie had a child in 1993, and the band was essentially disbanded, although they eventually reformed as Oosh the next year. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
